A new course and a seminar at Robert Beck Art Academy


Refining Color Class

This four-week course will intensely focus on the issue of observational color. We will sharpen the abilities to identify, select, suggest and mix colors in a range of chromatic experiences from subtle to extreme. Still life subjects will be the jumping off point for our investigations into the chemistry, theory, philosophy and intuition of color. The class will be shaped around the level of expertise and interests of the individual students.

Four-week Day sessions

Mondays 1-4 Nov. 28th – Dec. 19th

$160 per session.

Canvas and Board Preparation
In this evening seminar Alex will go through the process of building and preparing canvases and boards.  Learn how to create a proper substrate and develop a greater sensitivity for the painted surface as a result.  Bring your materials and work alongside.  For full materials list contact Alex.

- I've been included in a wonderful painting show Curated by Bill Scott at the Mainline Art Center.

Painting has always held an important place at Main Line Art Center and this exhibition brings back highly regarded painter, Bill Scott, who as a young boy studied at the Art Center and Haverford Friends School. In PAINT! Scott selects paintings and works on paper by younger artists whose work he admires. The exhibition features artists age 24 to 39 from throughout the US and now living in Philadelphia. The artists' differing approaches and dedication to their medium highlight how contemporary painting thrives in the region.

Rising Artist Crit with Bill Scott

Have you been out of art school and working independently for 4 to 8 years and at a place where you would benefit from feedback from professional artists? Bill along with one of the artists from the exhibition PAINT! will be available to discuss your work and different options with you during this daylong critique. - I participated in a lovely group show at the Camden Cultural Commission's Hopkin's House. The show, entitled "Intimations" was curated by Bruce Garrity and included works by Aubrey Levinthal, David Campbell, Michael Bartman, Jeanine LaClaire, Roger Chavez and Kyle Stevens.

I will be teaching two new courses at the Robert Beck Art Academy this fall. See below for information.

The Curious Portrait.

A four-week course examining various investigative approaches to discovering the portrait. The class will balance an emphasis on observational techniques with philosophical and felt impressions of the portrait. Students will learn foundations of head structure whilst exploring more intuitive definitions of portrayal. The subject will alternate from live model to self-portrait to invention. All levels of expertise are welcome.

2 four-week day sessions:

Session one: Mondays Sept. 12th - Oct. 3rd, 1-4 pm
Session two: Mondays Oct 10th – Oct 31, 1-4 pm

The Curious Landscape.

A four-week investigation of the landscape in experiential terms. Rather than looking for the picturesque we will be exploring the dynamics of space. Students will hone their perceptions of depth, light and form while conjuring a sense of personal intrigue to the landscape. First class will meet at Robert Beck Academy. Locations will include both traditional and untraditional Bucks County environs. All levels of experience are welcome.

2 four-week sessions,

Session two: Saturdays Oct. 8th – Oct. 29th , 1-4 pm

- My paintings will be included in a group show at Red Raven Art Company in Lancaster PA. The opening reception is Friday March 4th from 5pm til 8pm.

Advanced Oil Painting - Envisioning the Figure
At Robert Beck Art Academy in Lambertville, NJ

Foundation skills required. This is a course for those familiar with the fundamentals of oil painting - drawing, composition, color, etc, who wish to explore unique ways of approaching figurative painting. The eight-week courses will address how to mingle close observation with personal expression to help students find their individual relationship to the human figure.

(8-weeks) beginning March 21st is offered at two times: Monday afternoons 1 - 4 PM, and Monday evenings 5:30 -8:30PM.
Tuition for each 8-week session is $375.00 plus an additional $50 to cover the cost of the model. The maximum class size is 8 students..  Please contact for further description or to register for class.

- My piece, The Spirit of St. Louis has been selected for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts juried alumni exhibition in the the
new alumni gallery in the Historic Landmark Building at Broad and Cherry Streets. The opening will be held Friday Nov. 5th at 5:30


- My work will be on display at the UPENN arts fair on Sat. Oct. 30th in conjunction with their homecoming weekend. The fair will take place along Locust Walk.

- My piece, "Frenzy" has been selected for the Camden Cultural Comission's 36th annual juried exhibition at the Hopkin's House Gallery along the Cooper River. The exhibition will run through November.

July 7th

-My painting, "Landfall" received 3rd prize in the 66th Annual Cheltenham Juried Painting Exhibition.

-My painting "Seeking Shelter" is part of the City Hall show "In Your Dreams" featuring work inspired by dreams.

-I am now writing a regular guest collum for Jan Lipes in the Bucks County Herald's Artist Corner section. The collums will appear the first week of each month.

-Beginning in August I will be giving drawing and painting seminars in my studio. Please contact me if you'd be interested in particpating.

April 19th

- I am exhibited recent work alongside my mother's paintings for the first time. The exhibition at Chandler Hall in Newtown runs through May.

- My painting, "Fox Hunt Lamp" has been excepted into the Small Works Exhibiton at the Philadelphia Sketch Club on the corner ofCamac and Latimer.

March 25th

CD Release party for James Coane's newest, "Dominance and Submission" this sunday, Marh 29th at Bucks Gallery of Fine Art in Newtown PA, beginning at 3:00. Bucks Gallery is located at 201 S. State Street, Newtown, Pa. 18940
